How to Transfer Embroidery Patterns

Embroidery stickers are an effective and reliable way to transfer an embroidery design to fabrics.

Follow the steps in this blog post, or watch the video at the bottom of the page for a demonstration on how to use embroidery transfer paper.

Embroidery stickers are one of the easiest ways to stitch a design onto fabric without leaving any trace of the outline after stitching.

There are various names for the same product: embroidery patches, transfer paper, stick and stitch paper and wash away or water soluble stabiliser.

You can draw or trace a design onto stick and stitch paper, or print the design out. My embroidery stickers are printed at a slightly lower density than normal to prevent any ink bleeding onto the design when the transfer gets washed away.

Once the design is transferred, peel off the backing and stick the design onto your chosen fabric.

You can then mount the fabric into an embroidery hoop or frame and embroider your design however you like.

I have used straight stitch, French knots, stem stitch, and long and short satin stitch.

When you’ve finished stitching, the embroidery sticker dissolves in warm water.

The sticker is made from PVA (polyvinyl alcohol). It’s a naturally biodegradable substance and is safe to dissolve in water.

You need to leave it to soak for at least half an hour to dissolve the paper completely. Warm water helps speed this up.

After that, dry the embroidery piece flat and iron it on the reverse when it’s dry.

The stabiliser and outlines have been washed away, leaving you with a beautifully stitched finished piece.
